A March for All Our Babies

It’s so easy to get wrapped up in our day-to-day lives. It’s easy to dive head first into our schedules, routines, coffee cups (most mornings I’d love to be able to dive into mine), our work, social media. It’s easy to forget how far we’ve come because we don’t have to remember, and, it’s easy to forget that our daily reminders are staring us in the face. Every. Day.

We are lucky.

My kids are March of Dimes babies. I’m a March of Dimes baby. I would venture to guess that 99% of you reading this are March of Dimes babies.

Ever hear of the Polio vaccine? Apgar score? Surfactant? PREEMIE Act?

OK, maybe not those last two, but, did you know that the March of Dimes began with President Franklin D. Rosevelt’s personal struggle with Polio? The history of the March of Dimes is lengthy and rich and since the development of the Polio vaccine, the March of Dimes has focused on research and education for pregnant women, prevention of birth defects, prevention of premature birth and healthy pregnancy.

Clearly, this is a cause near and dear to me. Like I said above, it’s easy to forget how lucky we are. Our family has directly benefitted from the research performed by the March of Dimes in so many ways, and I believe that their continued research will reduce the number of premature births and babies born with birth defects even more. Births that are difficult physically and emotionally for mom and baby. Births that are expensive for our communities in so many ways. Births that end with heartbreak and funerals. I know, that’s dark, but it’s the truth.

Two years ago, we were the ambassador for the Northern New Mexico chapter of the March of Dimes. This video about our journey is old but it still makes me cry every time.

The March for Babies walk is a nationwide fundraiser that supports families like mine. Like yours. Click below–see that giant purple thing right under this paragraph–click there to make a donation to our fundraising efforts and helping me meet my personal fundraising goal of $1,700 to continue helping families in our communities.

We’d also love to have you join our fundraising team and ask your communities and networks to help raise money and awareness for this organization that has saved and improved the lives of so many families. Join our team here.

And…if you’re so inclined, we’d LOVE to have you join us at North Domingo Baca Park in Albuquerque on Saturday, May 12 to walk in support of the March of Dimes.
